Here’s the round up for October food events in BC.  Check back often as we will update as we become aware of new events.  If you have others, please feel free to submit them to us.

Farmers’ Markets

You can find a full listing at the BC Association of Famers’ Markets site.  Most markets across BC will be closing this month so check the website to see when your local market’s last day is.

Bakers’ Market – Oct 6 – Dec 8th, Saturdays 11am – 3pm, Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre 7646 Prince Albert Street, Vancouver. BC Craft Beer Monthevents throughout October and BC to celebrate craft beer in British Columbia.  Check out the events happening as well as the brewers and brewpubs participating.  Celebrate BC Craft Beer! www.craftbeermonth.ca

Vancouver Oktoberfest Oct 5 – 20th, Vancouver Alpen Club.  Tickets are $25 for general admission (no food or drink) or VIP for $75 including 3 drink tickets, a buffet, the VIP lounge and $20 gift certificate for the restaurant. More info

BC Wines for Thanksgiving – Free Tasting – Oct 6th & 7th 2-6pm Okanagan Estate Wine Shop – 3669 W4th Ave Vancouver.  Sample some great BC wines to pair with your Thanksgiving Dinner along with some fine cheeses.  Wineries include Gray Monk, Wild Goose, Cedar Creek and Quails Gate. More info

Fairmont Zucchini 500 Oct 7 1-3pm, Fairmont Chateau Whistler. $10 entry fee.  Join the Chateau as they launch the first annual zucchini race to fundraise for Sea to Sky Charities.  Try your hand at building and racing your very own zucchini on the croquet lawn for a chance to win a night at the hotel.  There will also be a “veggie fashion show”! NXNW Cooking Club Taping with Rob Feenie October 10th, 3pm, Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks, 1740 West 2nd, Vancouver.  Stop by Books For Cooks as CBC’s Sheryl MacKay from North By Northwest sets up her mobile studio to interview chef and author Rob Feenie.  Listen as they chat and then watch as Chef Feenie puts on a cooking demonstration. Fungus Among Us Mushroom Festival Oct 12-13.  Whistler – multiple events. Presented by the Whistler Naturalists.  Enjoy Mushroom talks, walks and gourmet tastings.  All events are $35-45 and under 18s are free.  More info

BC Beer Awards October 13th, Chapel Arts 340 Dunlevy, Vancouver.  $35 + fee. Part of BC Craft Beer Month, the 3rd annual awards showcases and celebrates the very best of locally made beer.  The event is held in tandem with CAMRA’s Harvest Cask Festival consumer tasting, with food provided by some of Vancouver’s best beer friendly restaurants. SOLD OUT

BC Restaurant Hall of Fame Gala – Oct 15, 5pm onward, Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan St Vancouver $175/person.  This year’s inductees will include Jim Treliving and George Melville, Brent Davies, John Levinge, Howard Soon, Blair Rasmussen and many others.  More info

Taste of Yaletown – Oct 17 – 27th.  Locations throughout Yaletown, Vancouver.  Menus and participating restaurants will be available Oct 2 but be sure to make reservations for menus that range from $25, $35 or $45 from some of Yaletown’s best restaurants.  More info

The Intolerant Gourmet with Barbara Kafka Oct 18, 6:30pm, Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks, 1740 West 2nd, Vancouver.  $115 (only 16 places available and it includes a signed copy of The Intolerant Gourmet).  Join Barbara, a recipient of the James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award, contributor to Saveur, NY Times, and Gourmet and author of multiple books at Books For Cooks for an informative evening with one of the stars of the food writing world. More info. A taping of NXNW for CBC will occur earlier in the afternoon at 4pm that all are welcome to attend.

Snack Attack with Cynthia Nims – October 19, 6pm, Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks, 1740 West 2nd, Vancouver. $39 (includes a signed copy of Salty Snacks) Got a savory tooth instead of a sweet tooth?  Come watch as Cynithia Nim demonstrates some of her savoury snack ideas from her book Salty Snacks, while you enjoy some refreshments. From Farms to Forks 3 Oct 21 5:30 – 9:30pm Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts 1505 West 2nd Ave, Vancouver – $149.  Organized by Growing Chefs! Chefs for Children’s Urban Agriculture this is a night where some of Vancouver’s most prominent chefs, mixologists, and the regions best growers and producers come together for a fun evening of canapes, BC wine and beer pairings, cocktails and tasting stations.  More info

Food Talks Volume 4 – Oct 23 6:30 – 9pm. Vancouver Urban Winery 55 Dunlevy, Vancouver. $30 before Oct 21st.  Join speakers Emad and Shannon Yacoub – Proprieters of the Glowbal Group, Steve Thorp and Mike Macquisten – founders of the Vancouver Urban Winery, Greg Hook – chocolatier and owner of Chocolate Arts, Lesley Stowe – creator of Rainforest Crisps and more in this informative evening of all things food. Shake up Yaletown – Oct 25, 5-8pm Minami Restaurant, 1118 Mainland St, Vancouver $30.  Join the best bartenders in Yaletown as they create award winning cocktails, exclusive to Taste of Yaletown.  Sample competing cocktails while trying feature menu items from Minami. More info

Classes, Workshops and Seminars

Crosstown, Vancouver $150/person.  Learn to conquer Lobster Thermidor, Boeuf Bourguignon and Chocolate Soufflé in this class inspired by Julia’s classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking. More info.

French Desserts  – Oct 7th, 4:30 – 7:30 Cook Culture, 1317 Blanshard St, The Atrium Building, Victoria. $75.  Learn from Chef Megan Hennis as she shows you how to make crème caramel, madeleines, eclairs filled with pastry cream and grand marnier soufflé with ganache sauce.  More info

The Comfort Foods Class – Oct 8th 5:30 – 9:30pm Dirty Apron Cooking School, 540 Beatty Street Crosstown, Vancouver $150/person. Spend an evening making comfort food classics like Lobster Mac & Cheese, Wild Mushroom & Truffle Chicken Pot Pie, Coffee-Bailey’s Sticky Toffee Pudding with Apple Cinnamon Ice Cream. Vegan Indian Cooking with Anupy Singla – October 13, 11am. Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks, 1740 West 2nd, Vancouver. $85. Anupy is the author of the new book Vegan Indian Cooking as well as Indian Slow Cooker.  Join her as she teaches a class on preparing favourite Indian recipes with only vegan ingredients. Gluten Free with Chef Cosmo Means – October 16, 6-9pm Cook Culture, 1317 Blanshard St, The Atrium Building
Victoria. $85.  Learn to mix your own gluten free flour blends to give you the best results for different types of menus.  More Info

Dirty Deep South- Oct 18th 6-9pm The London Chef, 953 Fort Street Victoria,  $90/person.  Learn how to put together a southern feast  as you make cornbread, baby back ribs with chipotle bbq sauce, Napa cabbage slaw, baked beans and strawberry shortcake. More info.

Food Photography In-Studio Workshop Oct 20 9am – noon and Oct 21 9am – noon or 1pm – 4pm, Vancouver (location to be announced later), $75. This two day workshop is hosted by Eat Marketing and will take place near Stadium Skytrain station in a controlled studio environment with access to softboxes, umbrella lights and more.  It is a peer led workshop focusing on collaboration with several experienced photographers in attendance to guide and give feedback throughout the event.  More details and to purchase tickets.

Cheesemaking 101 – Oct 20 1-3:30pm Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre 181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver. $40.00.  Join organic farmer and cheesemaker, David Asher, from Mayne Island as he demonstrates techniques for 3 basic styles of cheese: paneer, yogourt and camembert.  Enjoy some cheese tasting after the demos.  More info

Fall Into Flavour – A Seasonal Celebration of Fall Harvest Oct 25th, 5:30 – 9:30pm Dirty Apron Cooking School, 540 Beatty Street Crosstown, Vancouver $150/person. Learn how to make a meal that shows off the best of fall harvest with Roasted Butternut Squash Tortellini, Italian Osso Bucco with Roasted Garlic Asiago Polenta finished with a dessert of Chocolate & Barollo Crema.
