Name: Mairlyn Smith
Blog name and URL: mairlynsmith.com
Where were you born? Vancouver, BC – yes, I’m a west coaster!
Where are you living now? Much to my mother’s chagrin – I live in Toronto
Why did you start your blog? I was doing demos on TV and I kept getting emails from people asking me if I had a link to my website, and I thought, website? Now there’s an idea!
How did you decide on your blog name? I’m not creative in naming things! My blog/website name is sooo boring – it’s my name – but I was trying to brand myself as the accessible easy to understand go to person for healthy eating advice, which is a really long title – so I decided to just use my name.
What do you blog about? I have two separate sections on my website my Monthly Blog as well as My Spin on Things. My website is about healthy eating, etc. but I blog about:stuff that makes me insane, separating myths from the truth, helping people navigate through the mess of information out there so they can figure out the what is fact and what is fiction.
What post are you most proud of and why? My tea party post! *insert giggling* not even remotely healthy but it’s about the power of friendships especially women’s friendships plus it’s a tribute to my mom and my grandmother.
Which post do you wish received more love and why? The post I wrote about reducing our sugar consumption. I asked people to jump on board reducing their sugar intake – I called it The Sugar Challenge – and I never had one single person comment, email me, tweet me, Facebook me, nothing! Plus the traffic on the page was bleak. I don’t think people want to give up sugar! LOL!
Which post’s success surprised you and why? The one I wrote recently about my trip to Italy. There is info on extra virgin olive oil and how to choose a 100% Italian EVOO – I knew it would be big but with 52,000 hits and climbing I think I may have hit a nerve.
What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without? My husband – he’s my dishwasher, especially when I get home from a TV shoot it’s such a pain in the a$% to wash everything and then put it away – he’s there to help. He’s a keeper.
What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without? That’s really hard – I have so many kitchen toys I even wrote about them in Healthy Starts Here! I guess the #1 would be my knives. One is a Henkel which I have had for eons and the other is fairly new – about 5 years old. It’s a Japanese style santoku with a melted handle. I’m never throwing this baby out.
Favourite food, care to share a recipe? Well it’s a toss-up between a fabulous just cooked piece of salmon and chocolate. But I’m going with the smartest recipe I ever created – a heart healthy chocolate cookie. My Triple Chocolate Brownie Cookie is a whole grain, heart healthy cookie made with whole wheat flour, wheat germ, canola oil and three versions of chocolate – cocoa nibs-the best version of flavanol rich cocoa, natural cocoa powder, and then really great chocolate for the love of it!
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page? I’m vertically challenged AND that I have a teeny tiny regular no bells nor whistles kitchen.
What makes your blog unique? As the only professional home economist that is also an alumnus of the Second City Comedy Troupe I try to bring the nutrition and healthy eating message with a sense of humour.
