Was there something to having that dedicated table for homework when we were kids? Homework was always done at the desk in my bedroom or at the kitchen table, especially if multiplication was on the agenda. It was annoying and certainly not fun! However, there was something about routine, and looking back, it was about accountability and not having my attention diverted elsewhere.
The distractions used to be the VCR, playing Nintendo, wrestling with WWF figurines and bugging my younger sister. Nowadays, it’s Netflix, constantly checking your phone, playing Candy Crush and making sure your son doesn’t bug his little sister (or something along those lines).
I’ve lived in 12 places in the last 18 months, so I know I’ve lacked consistency with my “work space” environment, but through it all, I’ve tried to abide by some rules along the way to focus and maximize the time I spend working on blog stuff.*
- Only the windows on your browser needed to get things accomplished should remain open. Unless it’s an article on your Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest account, close them up.
- I’m guilty of convincing myself that I can be productive while sitting on the couch and yet it’s never the case. There’s a reason wooden chairs, tables and desks were made. A couch leads to naps and hard wooden chairs leads to productivity!
- Set goals. 30 minutes of answering emails or writing without interruption can feel like an eternity and more often than not, you’ll be amazed at how much was accomplished.
- Set rewards. There’s a reason we had to eat our vegetables to get dessert growing up. It doesn’t have to be much, even allowing yourself to try and get to the next level of Candy Crush after some hard work can be a pretty tempting carrot.
- Make a (reasonable) list. That feeling of crossing things off a list or ticking a check-mark beside that pesky post that just won’t finish is second to none.
- Finish one list and start another. Spending a few minutes on tomorrow’s to-do list helps to settle your thoughts and makes for an easier transition when you sit down the next time.
