Name: Shauna

Blog name: Satori Design for Living

Where were you born?

Born in Daysland, Alberta but raised in the country just outside Forestburg, Alberta (small prairie town in East Central Alberta)

Where are you living now?

Okotoks, Alberta (just south of Calgary)

Why did you start your blog?

I started the Satori blog in 2011 as a way to chronicle client projects and answer some of the design, decorating & organizing questions people asked me over and over again.

After only a few months, I was hooked, and began sharing even more of the things I enjoy doing like baking, entertaining and gardening.

How did you decide on your blog name?

My blog name came to me after reading the book, A New Earth. A bit complicated to put into words, but I try my best to explain in the blog post What’s in a Name?

What do you blog about?

Beautiful spaces, delicious food, outdoor projects, entertaining, home organization and more! To sum it up, I share my creative adventures in design, home and life.

What post on your blog most encapsulates you?

DIY Bar Cart for Outdoor Entertaining.  This post is the perfect marriage of my love of thrifting, decorating and entertaining. I’m all about good food and drinks, but the styling is equally as important, especially when it can all be done on a budget.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Homemade Caramel Pecan Ice Cream.  Over the past few years, I’ve tried my best to eliminate foods from our grocery list that contain modified ingredients and preservatives. To my family’s dismay, ice cream got nixed.

I’m not “all or none” in regards to food. Instead, I aim for balance when it comes to what we put into our bodies. This recipe is a good compromise that keeps everyone in the family happy.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Refreshing Basil Cucumber Mojito

This was such an easy post to put together, yet it’s one of the most popular on the blog to date. I guess simple is often better!

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

Time. Quite often, taking care of my family and other commitments hinders being able to focus on blogging. Like so many others, I feel like I’m pulled in many directions on any given day. However, one of the reasons I chose this career was the flexibility to align more fully with my priorities. Blogging does allow me to put my family at the top of the list.

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?

Cookie & Kate - Kate inspires me to make delicious, seasonal, healthy dishes using real, sustainable food. It doesn’t hurt that her photography makes me want to take a bite out of my screen!

Twigg Studios - Aimee is one of the best I know at creating delicious recipes combined with food artistry. Thank goodness she isn’t my neighbour or I’d be knocking on her door daily for a piece of that delicious cake!

Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

If you’re ever in Calgary, you must check out Tango Bistro. They make the best wild mushroom soup, upscale poutine and chai bread pudding. It’s my go-to place when it’s time to indulge.

What are you working on next for your blog?

I’ve been collecting vintage home décor and housewares for the past while and plan on opening an online shop later this year.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

Although I’m inspired by cookbooks, blogs and magazines, I never seem to follow someone else’s recipe. I like to put my own spin on everything. It’s just what I do.

What makes your blog unique?

I strive to blog from my heart and share posts that are a reflection of what’s going on in my life. With so much outside bombardment, it can be challenging, but I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job at staying true to myself.

What’s your Favourite FBC Feature?

She Eats - I recently discovered and fell in love with Kristy’s blog through FBC. I adore her sense of humour, delicious recipes and beautiful styling!
