Name: Lyndsay Sung

Blog name: Coco Cake Land.

Where were you born? Vancouver, British Columbia

Where are you living now? Vancouver, British Columbia

Why did you start your blog?

I started it to document the baking I was doing, then it became a visual document of the many many cake orders I was churning out. I knew nothing about blogging when I started, and barely anything about baking or cake decorating!

How did you decide on your blog name?

My cake business started out being called Coco Cake – and then I added the “land” to encompass everything my blog is about, which is cakes, tutorials, recipes, photography and snippets of my personal life, too! Maybe I always imagine myself frolicking around in a brightly colourful lala land of cakes and desserts… ha!

What do you blog about?

Cakes! I lovingly photograph cakes I make for clients here in Vancouver, but since having my son in 2012 my blog has transitioned into a place where I share cake decorating tutorials, cake, cookie and donut recipes and it’s where I have a lot of fun styling, photographing and experimenting with my work. I also love writing so there’s often silly family anecdotes or stories or memories attached to the things I make.

What post are you most proud of and why?

I loved doing my son’s 1st birthday party so I’ll say that post. We had a dog-themed birthday BBQ for him (which was supposed to include splashing around in the backyard in kiddie pools but it rained). It kind of exemplifies what I’m about: good times and cool moments, party-loving in a not too overdone way but pretty cute with a nice amount of craft and personal touches.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

I fell in love with what I thought was a hee-larious bright blue “mutant bunny cake” I made for Halloween – but I guess people are more into the Halloween classiques such as ghosts and pumpkins! I just love his weird little cute face and the bright colours and the pink cake layers!

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

I slammed together these coffee icing glazed donuts and the interweb went wild for them! It was pinned by all the big pinners and loved by many. It was one of those posts where I was like, hmm, I’m going to play around with a donut recipe and try and make some content really fast for my blog because I didn’t have anything ready to post for the following day! I do get it though – people LOVE donuts and they LOVE coffee!

What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?

I was a late bloomer to the iPhone but now it’s like my third hand. It’s terrible how much I use the thing. I love Instagram so much and it’s such a fun way to interact with both friends and fans. I feel like I’ve made lots of nice pals through it too!

What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?

Clearly it would have to be my Kitchen Aid! That thing gets blasted day and night! Those things are worth every cent though. Mine was a wedding present from my beloved grandma, who is currently almost 92 years of age! She was a terrific baker.

Favourite food, care to share a recipe?

I’m insane-o for peanut butter and chocolate together. It’s painful how delicious I find this combination. Homemade Peanut Butter Cups.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

To be encouraging, I’ll say that I started my blog knowing nothing about blogging or baking, but after 6 years of working pretty darn hard and slowly developing an aesthetic and brand, it’s been a process of change, discovery and experimentation to find out what works for me and to uncover the things I love about blogging. Also, I used to play music in bands and have toured across North America several times as well as Europe!

What makes your blog unique?

I came into the baking world from a different path. I have a design aesthetic that has been honed since I was a kid when I was madly drawing cartoons and illustrations. I love vintage meets modern, and I have a strong adoration for vintage children’s books and really cute illustration. I think all of these facets are reflected in my work! My background is also pretty wacky. No culinary training, but a degree in Women’s Studies/Film Studies (feminist baker!) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Integrated Media. So I think the big old mix of the experiences I’ve had so far in life make for a very specific blog. Ha!
