Why did you start your blog?

I wanted to challenge myself to take more pictures, write, and share ideas and recipes inspired by local and seasonal ingredients.  I started the blog shortly after I finished studying nutrition, hoping to share some things that I’ve learned along the way as well, but as it turns out I just want to talk about food. I’ve let go of the details and just want to spread some love on finding ways to eat more food that’s found close to home, be it mindful shopping, gardening, or foraging. I hope to encourage others to cook more, learn how to preserve, maybe grow something, and have some fun in the process.

How did you decide on your blog name?

Local + seasonal eats = From the Land we Live on :) I know it’s trivial and could use a little more wit.

What do you blog about?

For now I mostly share recipes, bits about gardening, food preservation, etc.. I’m hoping to make my blog more of a resource and/or a community at some point, but I’m still working on figuring that out.

What post on your blog most encapsulates you?

Kraut-Chi: A Step By Step Guide. This is one of the most popular posts on the blog and reflects the type of posts I want to be doing more often.  I loved sharing more of a useful guide vs. my usual ramblings and my mom came around to help so I was able to step outside my usual photography comfort zone and take some action shots, which was super fun.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Grilled Asparagus Nectarine Pasta Salad. This post got a lot of comment love, but not a lot of page views, and the recipe is really good! I mean they’re all good, but we made this salad like 10 times over the course of the summer and that never happens around here.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Crunchy Root Salad.  This was a very lovely recipe from Ottolenghi’s Plenty More. What surprised me was that this is one of the first recipes I posted on the blog, when I had 1 reader (Hi, mom!), and then one particular Pinterest fairy waved her magic wand (Hi, Jane!), and all of a sudden I had thousands of people on my blog. The weird and wonderful power of social media still surprises me.

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

Sharing bits about my life outside of blogging. I feel like it’s kind of important to do that in order to make connections with others in this space, so I’ve been trying to find ways to create engaging/genuine content, showing bits of my personality, while still maintaining a comfortable boundary with what I share online. For the same reason, embracing social media has been tough, but I’m getting better :)

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them? 

I’m a little obsessed with Kraut|Kopf these days. Their styling/photography is ridiculous and the recipes have a really intriguing wild streak.

Favourite food – care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

This might be a little strange, given what I blog about, but my favourite food is little salty fish (i.e anchovies, sardines, herring, mackerel, etc..). It’s my go-to comfort food, often straight out of a can or jar, maybe with a piece of generously buttered rye bread and sliced cucumbers or tomatoes. Maybe my Eastern European roots? I also have a thing for offal and grapefruit.

What are you working on next for your blog?

Working on some fall recipes right now! This is my first full fall with From the Land we Live on, and it’s my favourite time to cook so I’m excited to be creating new fall recipes! I’ll probably change things up come winter and try to do something else on the blog to challenge myself and keep things interesting, but I don’t know what that is just yet.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

Hmm..there isn’t much on my about me page (see the “blogging challenges” question)…so there are many ways I can answer this.

I’ll tell you a little bit about how I actually eat, which I’ll put up on my about page at some point…

I’m not into rules or even guidelines, and I eat anything and everything, often in great disbalance. From the Land we Live on has a plant-heavy, super local and seasonal focus, but that represents the type of food I seek out and strive to eat more of, not necessarily where I’m at with every meal. I totally believe in just listening to our minds and bodies, as cliche as that is, and eating what feels right, be it a green smoothie or a burger, local/seasonal or not. I feel super lucky not to have any allergies or major intolerances and access to all sorts of amazing food from all over the world, and I fully take advantage it.

What makes your blog unique?

Well my “niche” certainly isn’t unique, but I try to bring something new or unusual to every post by sharing ideas and recipes that aren’t widely known or written about. Most often I come up with them myself, or I’ll borrow recipes from cookbooks with no pictures (since very few people actually make them). I like to think that the few bits of my personality that I do actually bring to the blog make it unique as well :)

What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?

I love the Facebook community, even though I’m not the most active member of the bunch.
