FBC Featured Member: The Sweet Edge | Food Bloggers of Canada

Name: Elenore Jo Pili

Blog name: The Sweet Edge

Where were you born? I was born in Manila, Philippines.

Where are you living now? Currently in Toronto, Ontario.

Why did you start your blog?

I love sharing my adventures in the kitchen and sharing recipes and I’ve always thought of myself as a creative person. Having recently picked up photography, I thought to myself, why not start a blog? There’s still a lot to be learned but it’s been good so far.

How did you decide on your blog name?

The Sweet Edge was the name of my home-based bakeshop in the Philippines.  I just really wanted to continue using that name. “Edge”, was a nickname my close friends called me when I was younger. With my bakeshop specializing in custom cakes and desserts, it just fits to add “sweet” in it, simple and straightforward.

What do you blog about?

I blog about everything food related, mostly sharing recipes from baking to cooking, and sometimes I include healthier options. This is also where I share my food photography and cake creations.

What post on your blog most encapsulates you?

I think the Pound Cake post with crème anglaise. The recipe is very reflective of my experiences working in my kitchen: sometimes, things that are very simple and straightforward can also be quite extraordinary.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

The “Thank Goodness for Cheesecakes” post, I’d wish the post would receive more love because the recipe is fairly easy to prepare for a quick “pick-me-upper”. It’s smart way of storing too because it’s in jars and it is definitely yummy.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

The response for the recipe for Filipino Ensaymada took me by surprise because I was thinking that not a lot of people would be familiar with it. I’m so glad they did though, it’s one of my personal favourites.

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

I’ve always felt that there isn’t enough time to do things just the way I would like them. Like most bloggers, I put a lot of thought and effort in the blogs that I post. From recipe testing to getting the right photograph to accompany the text, it can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. It definitely helps a lot to have a family that is very supportive of what I do, giving me constructive criticism to help me with the creative process.

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?

Aside from FBC?!

Sweetapolita – mainly because most of her posts are about cakes. She shares good tips and recipes from cookies to making buttercream.

Local Milk  - Great recipes that’s categorized very well, very organized. Stunning and well composed photos. Her blog posts are beautifully written.

Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

Right now, it’s burgers. Particularly, The Burger Cellar, it’s on Yonge and Lawrence.

What are you working on next for your blog?

I’d like to share more easy to prepare meal recipes. Also, I’m trying to find my own style in food photography, to give my photos their own unique look.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

I love free-style cooking; I find it exciting because sometimes what’s on the menu for the week just isn’t what you’re craving for. It’s a great contrast to how strict baking is.

What makes your blog unique?

The diversity that can be found on my blog. It includes Filipino food and recipes that I enjoyed (still enjoy) growing up. I’m hoping that by featuring such recipes, it might encourage people to give it a try. And I guess it’s because it’s not concentrated on just one side of culinary – you can also find inspiration when making your next celebration cake.

What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?

Blogger Resources – it’s really a wealth of information, especially for someone who just started to blog.
