We're so proud of our FBC Members and all their accomplishments and it's wonderful to celebrate another newly published author among them this month with the introduction of Tiffany Mayer's new book, Niagara Food: A Flavourful History of the Peninsula's Bounty.  And we have some copies to give away!

Niagara Food by Tiffany Mayer

It's always fun when we get to celebrate a member's accomplishments and even more fun when we get to give stuff away in the process - like copies of Niagara Food: A Flavourful History of the Peninsula's Bounty!

If you have ever visited the Niagara region of Ontario, you likely know of its beauty and its bounty.  If you haven't it's probably on your bucket list of areas of Canada to visit (it should be!).

The region's international claim to fame are the many wineries that produce some of the best wines not only within Canada but around the world..   But there is so much more to this part of Ontario and Tiffany covers it all in this new book:

The Niagara region has a unique culinary history and tradition. From its mild microclimate that supports the cultivation of tender fruits — peaches, cherries, and more — to its role as the birthplace of the Canadian wine industry and home to a new generation of trailblazing chefs and restaurateurs, the Niagara region boasts a food and wine heritage that rivals any in North America. Niagara food writer, advocate, and activist Tiffany Mayer provides a thoughtful look at the many elements of Niagara's culinary past and present, including the planting of the first orchards and vineyards, the rise and fall of the local canning industry, the artisans responsible for crafting the region's most beloved food products, and the Greenbelt Act, which protects more than a million acres of the area's most precious agricultural land.

For those of you who don't know Tiffany, she is an award winning journalist who covers agriculture and culinary topics for many publications.  She's the author of Eating Niagara - a blog that covers all things related to local food  in the Niagara region.  She is also our FBC Ambassador for all of Ontario, excluding the Toronto area.  And we know from working with her that she is incredibly passionate about how we should be mindful of where our food comes from a as well as supporting the people in our communities who produce it.

A favorite culinary memory of Niagara: eating the peach pizza at The Pie Plate in Virgil, made with Niagara peaches!

Had a dinner/tour a few summers ago at the Jackson Triggs Winery. It was such a fabulous dinner and beautiful setting.

We visited Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2001. The Hubs and I checked out various vineyards while our youngest son enjoyed the Avondale Dairy Bar for ice cream

My partner and I visit Niagara-on-the-Lake and rented bikes and toured around to some great local wineries. Whenever possible we ate at local restaurants; it was one of the best trips we have ever been on. We came back to Ottawa with lots of bottles of Niagra wine and hope to return again soon. ps. Tiffany is awesome and I’d love to win a copy of this book to read all about the area from a culinary perspective so that when we return we can be introduced to all sorts of great local food and drink.

My favorite culinary story comes from Ste. Catharines, where I had a lovely lunch at a small local cafe with my partner and his brother. We had just finished touring the Henry of Pelham winery, and were happy but famished. Unfortunately, the name of the cafe escapes me right now, but they had board games, vegan salads and homemade power brews! It truly was the best day.

oh oh! I think I know exactly where you mean – I’m pretty sure that’s the same place we went after going to Pelham’s as well… I remember the board games. Can’t remember the name either!

I love the Niagara Region for it’s food and wine producers and feel so fortunate to live close to a place that is so abundant and beautiful. Great restaurants, wineries, and Niagara College where programs are offered in culinary arts plus wine and viticulture. What more could you ask from life than sitting in winery restaurant drinking the wine and eating food produced right where you are?

I’d love to go back to the Niagara area because it’s reminiscent of all the times when my friends and I would drive down there spontaneously at 4am in the morning to catch the sunrise. Now, I’m dying to go visit the vineyards and discover their local food!

I absolutely love the Wednesday night supper market in Niagara on the Lake! Lots of amazing food trucks, local beer, wine, and live music! My favorite truck is the Yellow Pear, their food is always fantastic, local, and their truck solar powered! I’m very sad to see the season come to a close.

After picking up the best pickles ever at Upper Canada cheese in Vineland, I returned weeks later to get more! Much to my chagrin, they were sold out! I called every gift shop in the region and no luck. Finally after much pleading, I got the owners of UC to give me the phone number of the pickler- Susan Howard of Off the Vine. She kindly gave up 6 jars of her personal stock so that I could give them out as Christmas gifts! Everyone loved the pickles, more so because of the story! I am still obsessed, stockpile of 12 jars should take me through to next summer – fingers crossed!!!
