Name: Bonnie Huang
Blog name: Scrumptiously Fit Food
Where were you born? Calgary, born and raised
Where are you living now? Still in good ol’ Calgary
Why did you start your blog?
I decided to start my blog to experiment with recipes that I enjoy and share it with others. It began as being more health centric but I realized that it only captured half of who I really am. The other half being someone who loves eating! Therefore the tone of the blog has shifted to being one that’s more about balance and sharing everything delicious.
How did you decide on your blog name?
I wanted a name that was representative of my love for both food and fitness hence Scrumptiously Fit Food!
What do you blog about?
Food has always been a huge part of who I am growing up. My parents have always placed an emphasis on healthy delicious home cooking. Therefore I really wanted to share that philosophy. I think if one lives a healthy lifestyle there is always room for indulgence. So my blog is really about all things that I love: food in all forms whether it be homemade dishes or amazing meals from home and abroad.
What post on your blog most encapsulates you?
I’m Chinese Canadian and no matter what I do or where I go, my roots help define me. Being raised in a traditional Chinese household there wasn’t a meal that didn’t include rice or something carb related. To this day I don’t feel satisfied without it on my plate and I often crave it. Those that know me personally know how much bread, noodles and rice I eat and so making mantous (Chinese buns) at home was a big step for me. Felt like I was coming full circle in a way.
Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Traveling has been a large part of me and really made me the person I am today. Without all those experiences I don’t think I would have been able to draw upon them for inspiration, but since my blog isn’t about traveling I’m not certain if people are reading the travel blogs even though I try to make them more food focused. I don’t think I’ll stop posting them because I enjoy writing them. My favorite destination to date is my trip to Easter Island and sometimes I read the post again because it really helps me relive the whole trip.
Which post’s success surprised you and why?

My post about healthy Baja Fish Tacos received quite a few visits from the web community. I guess there are many people out there looking for healthier recipes and who doesn’t love tacos!
What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?
Since I’m not a full time food writer and blog solely as a hobby, it’s often tough to find time to really put my thoughts to paper (or keyboard nowadays). However, because this is something I truly enjoy I always try to find time for it no matter what. It calms me down because it’s extremely opposite of my day job as a Project Manager. Sometimes when I’m stressed I turn to blogging to get my mind off of things.
Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?
David Lebovitz – There’s nothing about Paris that doesn’t excite me and reading about David’s foodie adventures makes me miss the city every time. Plus, his insider tidbits coupled with his restaurant background really elevates the blog.
Serious Eats – If for nothing else but their amazing food photos! I do find a lot of their posts quite intriguing and they often cover topics that I would have enjoyed writing about. A great resource in general!
Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

This is a tough one because I love all food making it hard to choose just one. If I really had to pick I’d have to stick to my Asian roots and go with Chinese Sticky Rice. It’s something I grew up eating often and still indulge in at home or when I go out for dim sum. I just find it extremely comforting. The fact that it’s always delicious is a plus!
What are you working on next for your blog?
There are many different blogs that are in the hopper right now. Due to all the new restaurants in Calgary I have quite a few reviews that are pending.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
As I briefly mentioned, the name of my blog has ‘fit’ in it because I enjoy fitness. Working out has been a great way for me to relieve stress. I’ve always enjoyed running but in the last couple years I’ve gotten around to giving myself more time to really focus on it and ran my first half marathon with a time that I was really proud of. Since then I’ve finished a couple 10K runs and it’s probably something I’ll keep doing forever. Maybe even a full marathon one day?
What makes your blog unique?
I hope that my perspective on each post makes them my own. I try to interject stories of me and my family, how the influences of my past and my experiences growing up have led me to where I am today. I believe that even though people may be blogging about the same or similar items, depending on how the post is written and the different point of views, I believe each blog ends up being a reflection of the individual who composed it.
