brought to you by Arla Foods
Name: Jess Wan
Blog name: Where Jess Ate
Where were you born? Vancouver
Where are you living now? Toronto for the past 8 years.
Why did you start your blog?
I grew up in a household that really appreciates food. My mom is particularly adventurous and when I used to live at home, she would take us to different restaurants to expose us to new cuisines. I loved our mother-daughter dates because she’d always take me to new restaurants she had recently read about. It’s easy to see that my passion for food comes from her. It’s just too bad I didn’t inherit her amazing cooking skills too – my passion is for eating food, not so much cooking it! I love reading about food and trying new things so I decided to start a blog to share my dining experiences. I wanted to share with people different restaurants and dishes they otherwise may never have heard of or tried.
How did you decide on your blog name?
Mike, my boyfriend, came up with the name. I wanted to incorporate my name into it while keeping it short and simple so “Where Jess Ate” was perfect. Mike likes to joke that he should start a blog called “Where Mike Paid”…\
What do you blog about?
My blog is about my restaurant experiences – in Toronto as well as during my travels (most recently in France). There’s no such thing as a vacation for a food blogger!
What post are you most proud of and why?
It would have to be my dining experience at Eleven Madison Park in NYC. With 16 courses, it was quite the marathon and one of my most memorable meals to date.
Which post do you wish received more love and why?
L’Avant Comptoir in Paris. It’s a popular wine and tapas bar which only has standing room. It’s meant to be a spot to grab a drink and bite to eat before dinner or while waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant. It’s such a great concept. It’d be nice if they had something like that in Toronto. The food that came out of that tiny open kitchen was shockingly good – particularly the blood sausage macaron and sautéed duck hearts.
Which post’s success surprised you and why?
One of my most popular posts to date is Jacobs & Co Steakhouse. It’s surprising because my other popular posts are typically new and trendy restaurants that people often talk about. If you’re looking for a special occasion steak, Jacobs is the place to go.
What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?
My iPhone. I can’t leave home without it. Otherwise, I’ll start getting the twitter withdrawal sweats.
What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?
My coffee grinder. I love a fresh cup of joe to wake me up each morning.
Favourite food, care to share a recipe or restaurant choice?
I don’t know if there’s anything that satisfies me like a good pizza. Pizzeria Libretto is one of my favourites in the city and having been there numerous times I’m ashamed to say I’ve never actually blogged about them. I usually inhale their pizzas before remembering to snap a few photos.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
I’m an accountant by day. My parents are accountants and growing up, I always said I’d never become one…
What makes your blog unique?
I’m obviously not the only food blogger in Toronto but I think everyone has their own unique writing style. I try to keep my posts fun and honest. I’m often told I write like I talk so I think my personality really shines through in my posts.
