Food Trends TV: Gourmet Garbage | Food Bloggers of Canada

I was brought up in a household that regularly included the presence of two grandmothers. Sometimes just one was in residence and sometimes the two of them would be there together for weeks at a time, watching soap operas, sharing endless pots of tea and peeling potatoes while I hovered about hoping to catch snatches of family gossip.  Both of my grandmothers had been young mothers living on farms during the Great Depression. The experience had taught them a great many lessons but one of the most enduring for people of that generation was that food should not be taken for granted.

I learned how to cook from these two women (I also learned a lot of the back stories about the characters on Days of Our Lives but those lessons are proving less useful in the long term) and they instilled their respect of food in me from a young age. Those lessons have endured; to this day I keep a ‘scrap bag’ in the freezer where I collect chicken bones, tomato ends, herb stems and other kitchen scraps until the bag is filled. Then I transfer the frozen hodgepodge to a large pot, fill it with water, add a bay leaf and make stock.

So, as I began last year to see influential chefs and big grocery companies creating programs centred around using kitchen scraps and promoting the use of ‘ugly’ produce, I took note. Now, that the trend is gaining momentum, I’m thrilled to be able to support this fledgling movement with a Food Trends TV video. I hope it helps to remind everyone who watches it to think twice before they toss out an apple with a bruise on one side.
