Name: Louisa Clements

Blog name: Living Lou

Where were you born? Toronto, ON

Where are you living now? Toronto, ON

Why did you start your blog?

I started my blog a couple of weeks after my 17th birthday. I grew up doing a lot of cooking with my mum but when I was 16/17 it became my go-to procrastination method. The month of May was when I had finals and summative assignments, so naturally to take my procrastination to the next level, I started my blog. I didn’t know it at the time, but looking back at it, it is pretty clear that I was searching for a new creative outlet and found it in cooking, writing and photography.

How did you decide on your blog name?

I didn’t really put a lot of thought into it, a lot of my friends call me Lou and I love alliteration so Living Lou it was.

What do you blog about?

I blog about original recipes that I create in my kitchen, the recipes are usually healthy and approachable, no health-store or specialty ingredients, just good, real food. I also like to sprinkle in bits of my life into my posts, I want readers to feel like they know who I am beyond food.

What post are you most proud of and why?

FBC Featured Member | Living Lou

To be honest, I’m actually really proud of all of my posts! I put a lot of work into all of them, developing recipes, choosing the perfect props for photos, and crafting a story around the recipe. That said, I’m really proud of my Slow Cooker Moroccan Chicken Stew – I love anything with Moroccan flavours, and this is one of mine and my reader’s favourites.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

This Team Canada Olympic Party I threw last year. I was a competitive athlete growing up, and I just have so much respect for our athletes and I really enjoy cheering on our amazing country during the Olympics.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

My Slow Cooker Butter Chicken, I never realized so many people wanted to make butter chicken in their slow cookers!
What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?

Oh gosh, my Iphone. I’m completely glued to it, it’s awful. It dies at least once a day and I bring my charger with me everywhere.

What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?

I don’t know if this is considered a “gadget” but I’m kind of old school and am obsessed with my oven. I love the way flavours change and intensify when roasted. So yeah, I can’t live without my oven.

Favourite food, care to share a recipe?

Oh boy, I’m a serious lover of all foods. I actually love eating out as much as I enjoy cooking at home. I always joke that my last meal would be different dishes from multiple restaurants: chana masala, tuna tartar, a green dragon roll, homemade lasagna…it would be quite the combination.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

I talk about this a little bit on my about page, but I’m studying film and media production and I’m actually directing and producing my second short documentary as my thesis this year. So that is taking up most of my time outside of blogging. I also am in love with dance (it’s my favourite way to stay active), and I dance ballet multiple times a week.

What makes your blog unique?

I think every blog has something unique to bring to the table. For me, I think it’s just the fact that I’m 21 and stumbling through the messiness of life (especially in your twenties, yikes), and chronicling it through food, which is my favourite way to share with others. I’ve also started expanding and adding video content to my blog.
