Why did you start your blog?

Both as an outlet for my “thinking out loud” curious theories about food and also as a way to feed my deep-seated desire to write.

How did you decide on your blog name?

I wanted something different and a friend suggested Food with Legs as a name because it captures the idea of writing about strong, long-lasting ideas about food (i.e. this story has legs) and also the feeling that I wanted to tell stories with depth (i.e. these are the roots or legs that support what I’m writing about.)

What do you blog about?

Whatever makes me hungry. Sometimes that has been fermenting, gardening, restaurants in Toronto, culinary travel, craft beer, all sorts of recipes or even Ontario’s bizarre rules and laws that pertain to food and drink. Basically, I don’t think I’ve ever said to myself, “nah, that doesn’t fit into the scope of my blog.”

What post are you most proud of and why?

Food With Legs - Burger Priest's Secret Menu

You know, I thought about looking for a strategic or non-obvious answer to this one, but to be honest I’m most proud of the post that, for a time, made me look like a one-hit blogging wonder: The Burger’s Priest Secret Menu. It was useful and well-used (on several occasions I stood in line behind people who had print-outs of the post or it up on their smartphones); for a while I diligently kept it up-to-date; hell it was good enough that a “professional” journalist plagiarized it for his own blog—and then blamed his intern.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Food With Legs - Macelleria Atlas

Actually, a fairly recent one I wrote about Macelleria Atlas, a butcher shop in my neighbourhood. It’s an older established business, so I probably won’t get to write about them for one of the publications I write about new restaurants with, but I love the food they sell and I think they deserve more attention. In some ways, that’s one of the best motivations for a blog post.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

The post for Cutting Glass Bottles in Stop Motion hasn’t been a blockbuster, but the YouTube video I made for it is a minor success (over 90,000 views). I thought I had found another wacky, semi-obsessive way to turn trash into something useful, but I guess I should have realised that readers love “how-to” posts.

What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?

My Galaxy Tab 3 gets pretty heavy use these days. I thinking reading is the most important thing a writer can do and I use it to devour books on Kindle, magazines on Zinio, and all sorts of articles on Pocket.

What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?

All of my digital measurement tools. I think kitchen scales should be in everyone’s home and that non-contact IR thermometers will be the next must-have for those who like to cook accurately.

Favourite food, care to share a recipe?

Food With Legs - Wild Dill Pickles

I have to say the wild-fermented dill pickle recipe that I wrote about a couple years ago and have revisited on several occasions.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

It’s in the About Me, but I should probably mention that I just published my first cookbook, The Canadian Craft Beer Cookbook  late in 2013. It combines my passion for delicious craft beer and well-explained, geeky, but-approachable recipes.

Both that just about every (food and drink) topic is in bounds and that I don’t shy away from taking controversial positions.
