Each week we profile a different Canadian Food Blogger who is part of the FBC community.  This week meet Fanny, the Vancouver, BC blogger behind Oh Sweet Day!Oh Sweet Day Logo

Name: Fanny Lam

Blog name: Oh Sweet Day!

Where were you born? Hong Kong

Where are you living now? Vancouver BC

Why did you start your blog?

When I moved to Vancouver more than 10 years ago, I spent a lot of time exploring the city and local culture. Going to the farmers market was one of the highlights! I would look up the internet for recipes to cook and bake with the local ingredients from the market. That's how I discovered the blogging world. As my family came along, I enjoyed reading the parenting blogs too. And that's how I decided to create my own blog to chronicling my journey as a cook and a mother after I relocated from Hong Kong to Canada.

How did you decide on your blog name?

My blog is about how I spend my days with my family between cooking, baking and eating. Every day is such a sweet day for us!

What do you blog about?

Mostly dessert recipes (with photographs/food styling) that I truly enjoy eating and creating. My principle of cooking is simplicity. My goal is to make things simple enough so that anyone can follow or adapt.

Is your blog your business, your hobby or something in between?

A delightful mix of everything! Oh Sweet Day! plays triple role as an online bakery, baking blog and family journal. I'm lucky enough to have a decent amount of readers/followers, who allows me to earn advertising, sponsorship and collaboration opportunities.

What post on your blog most encapsulates you and why?

Chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting swirl

My Best Chocolate Cupcakes. The recipe represents my blog goal the best - simple, straight forward, but also delicious and show-stopping! I love how easy-peasy this one-bowl recipe goes. Also the photographs show how something minimal can look very stunning.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Matcha Red Bean Ice Cream Hazelnut Tart

Matcha Red Bean Ice Cream Hazelnut Tart. In fact I still have a hard time understanding why it wasn't as popular as I expected. Maybe it sounds a little too complicated and intimidating to put together? But this ice cream tart is truly heavenly!

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Mini Frittatas

Mini Frittata. Apparently it's not a dessert recipe, and that's surprising! But I guess it's appealing in a way that it's really simple to put together. For parents, these mini frittatas are perfect for school lunch.

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

Time, time and time! Running a family of four, a home-based bakery and a blog altogether requires an extra 24 hours each day!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a blogger?

The pictures I took when I just started my blog were horrible! I've improved my photography skills through connecting with other talented bloggers out there.

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?

Hint of Vanilla - A very inspiring place to challenge yourself to step up and bake something unconventional.

Joy the Baker - I enjoy going there for Joy's wonderful recipes, lovely stories and delightful random links to things

Call Me Cupcake - Mesmerized by Linda's vintage yet timeless photography style.

Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

My must-try easy-peasy molten lava cake. My son hates chocolate, but he loves my lava cake!

What are you working on next for your blog?

I'm very excited to announce that my first cookbook will be released in October 2018. And that's what I'm working on now.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

I met my husband when we were in high school in Hong Kong before he moved to Canada with his family. On and off, we maintained a long-distance relationship for a few years. After he finished college, he decided to move back to Hong Kong for work, and that's when we re-started dating, moved back to Canada together, married and built our family. We are into our marriage for 13 years. But we've know each other for almost 30 years.

What makes your blog unique?

Straight forward dessert recipes, minimalist photography style plus a hint of parenting stories.

What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?

Whenever I receive questions from my readers asking about tips to start and maintain a blog, I always refer them to your blogger resources page. I believe it's the most informative and caring resources to share with any potential bloggers.
