Name: Jolene

Blog name and URL: Everyday Foodie

Where were you born?

I was born in a hospital in Saskatoon, but lived on farm/summer camp that my parents ran, a couple hours north of Saskatoon. We moved to Regina when I was seven.

Where are you living now? Regina, Saskatchewan

Why did you start your blog?

I was reading a few food blogs, and was really getting into cooking, and entertaining. I loved hosting dinner parties, and thought that blogging would be a fun way to recap these, while providing me with a creative outlet.

How did you decide on your blog name?

My blog started out as a bit of a food log, where I documented everything I ate every day. I thought “Everyday Foodie” fit for that reason, and also because I was just an average girl, cooking average, “everyday” food.

What do you blog about?

I blog about food in general, including what I’ve been eating, recipes, eats while on vacation, and dinner parties, or other food events that my sweetheart and I host for our friends and families. I also throw a bit of myself and everyday life into the mix.

What post are you most proud of and why?

This is a really, really hard question. I have officially been blogging for 5 years, and in that time, I have had some amazing experiences, created some fantastic recipes, and hosted numerous dinner parties. This year however, I have had some completely new experiences as I partnered with Canadian Living magazine, and most recently, got to be a judge on Pizza Wars: Regina. This show will be airing in September, and I am the Super Streeter on the show. The Super Streeter is considered the local expert, and I am very proud and honoured to have been chosen for this role in the show.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

The Best Fish Burrito – I think the recipe is intimidating because it has a lot of steps, but it really is easy. Also, it is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Fried Chicken and Waffles – This post got a lot of love, and my photo was accepted by the site Tastespotting. I just never expected people to be that interested in chicken and waffles. But don’t get me wrong … they should be!

What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?

I can’t live without my point and shoot camera. It’s great for when I don’t want to lug around a big camera, perfect for travelling, and it fits into any handbag.

What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?

My Vita-Mix. We use that thing almost every day.

Favourite food, care to share a recipe?

I always get flak from people when I tell them that my favourite food is cilantro … although it sort of is. But, my favourite dish is probably bee bim bop. It’s Korean comfort food, and we love to make it at home using this recipe. It’s also great with beef or imitation crab instead of the shrimp.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

I love to travel and eat the local foods in different places, and my recipes are often inspired by these travels.

What makes your blog unique?

My blog is unique because I’m constantly trying new recipes and foods, and am always looking to create dishes never seen before. It’s also unique in that I don’t just post recipes, but also share a lot about my life with Christopher, and the adventures that we have.

Great interview with Jolene! I love her food blog and am always impressed by the dishes she comes up with. Plus she is just an all-around fun, positive person! I need to try her recipe for bee bim bop as she talks about making it quite often so I need to check it out!
