Name: Melissa Gabbs
Blog name: Mango About Town
Where were you born? Winnipeg, MB
Where are you living now? Winnipeg, MB
Why did you start your blog?
I started Mango About Town on a whim. I was searching for an outlet to talk about food and nutrition and a blog jumped out at me as a wonderful place to do that.
How did you decide on your blog name?
Mango came out of nowhere, really - it’s a fruit and starts with the same letter as my name! When I first started blogging my focus was around my food related adventures around Winnipeg. I put two and two together and Mango About Town was born.
What do you blog about?
Food, Cooking, Nutrition, and Health.
What post on your blog most encapsulates you?

The Importance of Cooking at Home. Food and cooking skills are so important, I think everyone should know how to cook at home.
Which post do you wish received more love and why?

How to Spot Nutrition Scams. I wish this post received more love because the information is so important! Many people believe in these nutrition scams, waste their money on them, and may even risk their health by using them.
Which post’s success surprised you and why?

5 Things I Learned While Completing my Undergraduate Degree in Nutrition. This post’s success totally surprised me. To be honest I really thought only my school friends would read it and enjoy it, but I’m happy it appealed to a much larger audience!
What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?
Finding the time to sit down and produce quality posts – I have so many ideas rolling around in my head and not enough hours in the day to get them out!
Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?
Chelsea’s Healthy Kitchen – I love Chelsea’s posts. She writes about really relevant nutrition topics but also includes awesome recipes.
The Lean Green Bean – Lindsay has great recipes that use ingredients that I don’t have to go to a specialty store to find. She’s also the queen of Sunday Food Prepping.
Fannetastic Food – Anne’s blog is full of great nutrition advice, awesome recipes, and lots of meal inspiration.
Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?
I love most food that I eat, but my most current favourite has to be the braised short ribs from Deseo in Winnipeg, MB.
What are you working on next for your blog?
I would really like to transition my blog into more of a professional space. As I begin my career as a Professional Home Economist I want my blog to be a space filled with relevant information as well as a place to get in contact with me.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
My “About Me” page is fairly reflective of me but it always surprises people that my master’s work is very hands on in the lab. I’m talking lab coat, spinning down vials of blood, and pipetting.
What makes your blog unique?
I think my education in nutrition, my professional experiences in the world of Home Economics, and my passion for science makes my blog stand out. You won’t find me promoting crazy juice cleanses or diets.
What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?
The Blogger Resources – particularly articles on social media, improving food photography, and ways to maximize blog writing.
