Skirting the High Personal Cost of going Gluten Free

Anyone who’s tried to give up gluten knows that even in this day and age where there are gluten free sections in most grocery stores that it’s difficult to live a busy life and cut gluten completely out of your diet.

While celiac disease sufferers have no choice but to pay the inconvenience cost of insisting on 100% gluten free foods all the time, many other Canadians avoid gluten for other health and fitness reasons. This later cohort has become the target market for food companies who can offer wheat-free and grain-free products but not meet the stringent rules for making gluten free claims on packaged foods.

The result? You’ll be seeing these two new claims on more book covers, menus and grocery store packages in the near future. The good news for recipe users and grocery shoppers, is that there will be more variety available to the people who want to avoid wheat belly or reduce gastric discomfort caused by wheat sensitivities.

So what does this mean for food bloggers? Beyond adding a couple of new tags to your appropriate posts probably not a lot; however, I bet there will be a few new blogs pop up that focus on these new claims to piggy back on the awareness that packaged food manufacturers are creating with their new package call outs.
