Days of Wine & Chocolate is the concluding event of Winter in Niagara-on-the-Lake Wine Country (Winter in Wine Country).  Winter in Wine Country spans over four months in 2012 and 2013 and features a unique event each month.  Taste the Season was offered in November, Stocking Days of Christmas is December’s featured event and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Icewine Festival takes place in January.

The Days of Wine & Chocolate Touring Pass Event is back in 2013 and the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are showcasing more delectable wine and chocolate-inspired pairings than ever before. Each of the 28 member wineries will pair a premium VQA wine matched with new chocolate-infused dishes. The event takes place weekends, including Fridays, during February 2013 (1/2/3, 8/9/10, 15/16/17, 22/23/24) from 11 am to 5 pm.

“This year we will be increasing the scope of food pairings to include both sweet and savoury dishes infused with decadent chocolate,” remarks Tim Coons, chair of the Days of Wine & Chocolate committee, “Using local ingredients and chocolate to accompany our wines adds a delicious new feature to this popular event.”

Each of the 28 Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake have assigned their winemakers with the task of finding the perfect wines to accompany decadent chocolate infused dishes. The wine and food selections will tantalize the palates of guests with both classic flavour combination and unexpected sweet and savory surprises. Check out the full listing of featured VQA wine and chocolate infused pairings.

The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are committed to working with local suppliers in addition to their in-house culinary teams as they develop their tastings.  Niagara-on-the-Lake pastry chef Catherine O’Donnell of Willow Cakes & Pastries will be working with many of the wineries again in 2013.  Her team will create over 50,000 delectable sweet savory dishes infused with chocolate and other local ingredients during the month-long event.

Definitely the Strewn Gewürztraminer & Nacho with Black Bean, Tomatillo & Spicy Dark Chocolate Mole. I live for savoury-sweet combos!

I’d love try the Strewin Winery 2010 Gewürztraminer Terroir & Nacho Topped with Black Bean, Tomatillo, and Spicy Dark Chocolate Mole. It sounds divine!

Is it bad if I am the first one to comment? I always have the impression that number 1 never gets picked.
Anyway, KONZELMANN ESTATE WINERY’s Fresco Secco Sparkling Riesling pair with Opera Slice makes my mouth water 🙂

Elizabeth Gorecki

I would love to try the MARYNISSEN ESTATES WINERY, 2007 Merlot, Triple Chocolate Fudge Brownie pairing. Chocolate and wine…..I’m in heaven! 🙂

Andrew Peller Signature Series Ice Cuvée
Candied Bacon and Chocolate Sponge Toffee and CHÂTEAU DES CHARMES
2009 Cabernet Franc, Estate Bottled
Bitter Chocolate Paté with Pecan Crunch.

All of the pairings look delightful! Its hard to choose but the one that really caught my attention was JOSEPH’S ESTATE WINES, 2009 Cabernet Franc, Milk Chocolate Toblerone Cheesecake. I have a sweet tooth and so I can’t turn down chocolate, especially when its a toblerone cheesecake!!!!

I’d love to try the Andrew Peller Signature Series Ice Cuvée paried with candied bacon and chocolate sponge toffee!

Last year, my aunts took me to the Niagara Icewine Festival (to celebrate my birthday). My favourite stop was at Niagara College. If I were to have a chance to attend another wine tour, I’d like to return to Niagara College to taste the 2011 College Rosé and Crème Brûlée Mousse.

Although all of those winery menus sound fascinating I would love to see chocolate paired with food. I especially like Choco Loco Chicken Mole from the organic Southbrooks Winery since most of the offerings are sweet I’ve always been fascinated with the savoury tastes

Since I live in the area, I regularly take the opportunity to sample local wines, but have yet to try any from the Niagara College Teaching Winery!! I will definitely want to try their Rose with the Creme Brulee Mousse!
I am attending the ice wine festival this weekend and will be posting about it on Monday!!

I think the savory offerings are especially interesting – I’d love to try the Nacho Topped with Black Bean, Tomatillo and Spicy Dark Chocolate Mole from Strewn Winery!

They all sound delicious but I especially like the sounds of the white chocolate dipped lemon shortbread cookie paired with Five Mile White from Coyote’s Run Estate Winery!

How to Eat

I will never pass us an opportunity for peanut butter and chocolate. Therefore – INNISKILLIN Icewine & Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls. Hands Down.
