Where were you born? I was born in Saudi Arabia but my parents are originally from India. When I was a year old, we moved to Canada.
Where are you living now? I live in Mississauga, Ontario with my husband and (almost) 2 year old daughter.
Why did you start your blog?
I am a Registered Dietitian but I don’t always like to talk about just nutrition. I like to translate the scientific information that I know in a format that everyone understands, which is food! I use my blog as platform to share the evidence based nutrition information in a way that can be easily digested (no pun intended).
How did you decide on your blog name?
I wanted something simple with my name in it so that people can see my as a trusted figure when it comes to nutrition information. The name Nutrition by Nazima was born when my husband and I were brainstorming names that would encompass nutrition and me.
What do you blog about?
My target audience is primarily Muslim women. I either do informative nutrition blog posts or recipe posts. The nutrition posts are on topics relevant to women, such as PCOS or pregnancy. Recipe posts are my favourite because I get to mix in my South Asian culture with my nutrition knowledge to create something nutritious AND delicious!
Is your blog your business, your hobby or something in between?
I would say it is primarily my business but since I am so passionate about it, it sometimes feels like my hobby too! I love being able to connect with readers all around the world.
What post on your blog most encapsulates you and why?
The most personal blog post I have written was “How I lost all my baby weight without dieting”. Before this, I didn’t share much about my personal life. It took me about 6 months to publish this post, because I was so nervous sharing such a personal side of me that wasn’t just about nutrients. When I finally shared this post, I received so much positive feedback and is one of the top read posts on my blog. This post encapsulates me because I share my diet-free philosophy as a Registered Dietitian.
Which post do you wish received more love and why?
I wish my Peach, Plum, and Nectarine Galette received more love because it is such a simple and visually stunning dessert! It is great as a brunch item or to enjoy at the end of the meal. You can use in season fruit and really reduce the amount of sugar used in this recipe.
Which post’s success surprised you and why?
Twice a year when my family and I celebrate Eid, we have a tradition where I make an extra special cheesecake that we eat after brunch. Last year, I made Baklava Cheesecake and posted the picture on Instagram. I was surprised at how many people asked me for the recipe that I HAD to create a blog post just for it. This is one of the few recipes on my blog that is purely a pleasure food, but it is such a fantastic recipe so it only made sense to document and share the recipe.
What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?
My biggest challenge is juggling all of my projects as well as taking care of my daughter. My husband and I made the decision to not put her in daycare, so most days she is with me. Luckily, she likes to sleep in until 10AM. This has forced me to become a morning person so I can get a good chunk of work done before she wakes up.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a blogger?
When I first started, I thought I needed to post everyday in order to be “successful”. I realized that since my blog is an extension of my business and not solely my business, posting every single day might not be necessary for me. I found that the most important thing is consistency and creating valuable content that is relevant to my target audience.
Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?
Minimalist Baker is my all-time food blogger crush. Every single recipe I try of hers is superb and usually consists of ingredients I already have at home!
I also love reading my fellow dietitian Abby Langer’s blog. She does in-depth reviews of different types of diets, making it easy to stay on top of diet trends.
Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?
My favourite food is cheesecake. Any kind of cheesecake really, as long as it is really good cheesecake. One of my favourite cheesecake spots in Toronto is Carole’s Cheesecake.
What are you working on next for your blog?
My next step is to create videos for the recipes I have on my blog. So far, I have shared a few recipe videos and the response has been great on social media.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
I have dessert a lot more than you would think a Dietitian would. I’m married to a Personal Trainer so most people think we are always eating chicken breast & salad. We both love dessert and will rarely say no when offered! I usually balance my sweet tooth by making healthier alternatives most weeks and making authentic versions on special occasions.
What makes your blog unique?
When I was studying nutrition I realized that there was a huge gap in culturally sensitive nutrition information being provided to Muslim women. I also noticed that most of these women are the primary cooks in the house, meaning they play a huge role in their family’s nutrition. I decided to create culturally sensitive content for Muslim women in order to address this gap, which makes my blog pretty unique.
What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?
I love the “Blogger Resources” section. Before I was a member of FBC, I would visit just for the blogger resources. It really helped me create a solid foundation for my blog and continues to provide me with valuable resources.
