Arab food is known to be heavy in rich and tasty meats. But did you know the cuisine is also loaded with delicious vibrant dishes that happen to be naturally vegan?

Waseem Hijazi from Plant Based Arab is sharing a collection of scrumptious vegan Arabic recipes, some of which are enjoyed across the globe! From shareable breakfast spreads (known as Mezze), to wholesome meals and nourishing appetizers, even desserts & sweets.

Shorbet Adas, Yalanji, hummus, falafel, Mujaddara, awameh,

As an immigrant Arab Canadian, and a recent vegan of 3 years, I’ve come to learn that I have been eating lots of vegan Arabic food my whole life. Whether that’s my daily dose of Hummus, or go-to dinner recipe: Mujaddara (Lentils with Rice or Bulgur). While I’m on a journey to veganize the traditional meat-based dishes, it’s my mission to shed some light on the plentiful plant based Arab foods, and dive deep into the culture through its bright and bold flavours. Whether you're new to the Arab cuisine, or curious about the vegan options out there, here are 6 of my favourite Arabic recipes that happen to be naturally vegan.

1. The Beloved Hummus

Creamy chickpea dip that’s silky smooth. Covered in extra virgin olive oil for a rich flavour combo. An essential part of a breakfast Mezze, homemade Hummus is a staple in every Arab kitchen. Make it in big batches and store in the fridge for everyday use. Slather on sandwiches, dip into it with warm pita, or do what you want with it!

2. Fluffy Herby Falafel

If you haven’t met yet, Falafel are fried chickpea balls that are made with an herby aromatic spice mixture. They’re crispy on the outside, with soft and fluffy green insides. Commonly served in warm pita wraps with fresh toppings and a drizzle of creamy tahini. They are also enjoyed as a shareable Mezze. Ever tried dipping it in Hummus?

3. Tangy Zesty Yalanji

These vegetarian stuffed grape leaves are a famous appetizer that originated from Turkey, and made their way across the Middle East with different variations. This one is made with a refreshing parsley, mint, and rice vegetable filling. Marinated in a tangy lemon, pomegranate molasses, and olive oil mixture. You’ll have a handful of these, and still go back for more!

4. Shorbet Adas

Cozy high-protein lentil soup, loaded with veggies and bright spices (like cumin and turmeric). Topped with crispy pita chips, a drizzle of lemon juice, and garnished with parsley. It’s a vibrant meal that can be enjoyed as a side to Ramadan dishes, or a nourishing entrée for lunch. Ready in less than 30 minutes.

5. Mujaddara

A hearty lentil dish made with grains (usually rice or bulgur), sautéed onions, and garnished with crispy caramelized onions. It’s a wholesome one-pot dish, made with only 8 pantry ingredients. Mujaddara is loaded with a fusion of flavours and it’s great for meal prep too. It’s so good, you can have it hot or cold!

6. Awameh

Crunchy sweet doughnut balls. Awameh / Luqaimaat are deep fried then drenched in a rosewater simple syrup. They’re a light and airy treat to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea. An irresistible Arabic dessert that’s popular during Ramadan and Eid. Fancy it up with a garnish of crushed pistachios and rose petals.
