The apple is the perfect snack - it's crunchy, juicy, sweet and tart at the same time and it comes in its own portable packaging! But apples can add so much depth, texture and unexpected flavour to your sweet and savoury dishes. They're a perfect ingredient to some of our favourite comfort recipes.
While on our Great Canadian Road Trip where we drove from coast to coast across Canada, exploring Canadian food and meeting the people who make, grow or raise it, one of our very first stops was the Kelowna, BC apple orchard owned by Hank and Darcel Markgraf. Here's a little sample of our visit:
BC Tree Fruits Ambrosia Apples (look for the leaf!), a BC original variety, are a great choice for snacking but they're also a favourite in the kitchen - they're firm, crisp and sweet and don't brown as quickly as other varieties when sliced making them a great choice for salads.
They're also great for baking and comfort food cooking. Their aroma when cooking is comforting all on its own. Pair them with chicken or pork, add some cinnamon or caramel for a delicious dessert, team them up with leftover bread for a food waste friendly bread pudding, or bake or sauté them to add to a healthy breakfast. You're only limited by your imagination!
To get you started with some inspiration we teamed up with BC Tree Fruits and 11 Canadian food bloggers to bring you these 11 comforting apple recipes that are perfect for enjoying all fall and winter!
