Every week we pull together some great Canadian recipes from Canadian food bloggers around the web featuring one main ingredient or dish. This week, it's the classic sweet treat: chocolate chip cookies.
Chocolate chip cookies are the cookie classic. The gold star of the cookie world, if you will.
They're the first cookie we learned how to bake as kids. They found their way into our lunchboxes and we all wanted a chocolate chip cookie after school with a big glass of milk while we did our homework.
I would nibble on my allotted two after school cookies in my room while curled up with a book, making them last as long as possible. (I still do this as an adult).
It's not hard to make chocolate chip cookies - you can turn any cookie recipe into a chocolate chip cookie recipe just by adding a handful of... you guessed it... chocolate chips! But make no mistake, there is an art form to creating the perfect chocolate chip cookie (and perfect means something different to anyone).
Some like chewy, others like crispy. Some want crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Some like them warm and gooey, fresh out of the oven (who are we kidding... everyone loves them like that!). Others like them straight out of the freezer (that would be me) so the flavours burst.
Do you add some sprinkles of sea salt? Or, do you want oatmeal in your cookies? Toffee? Peanut butter? Coconut? Do you mix it up and add in mint chocolate chips?
Are you a dark chocolate die hard or is it milk chocolate for you? Does white chocolate count? What about all three? Do you do mini chips, regular chips or are you the kind who goes for chocolate chunks?
Well, we have endless possibilities here for you - even gluten-free and vegan options. We are sure you will find your perfect chocolate chip cookie (but you made need to try all 30 recipes to make sure... for research purposes, of course!)
Whichever one you choose, pour yourself a glass of milk (dairy, nut, soy, oat... however you like it!) or make a cup of tea and sit back, put your feet up and sink your teeth into a warm, chocolately chip cookie and utter a sigh of contentment. It's the little things...
1. The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie
You are going to see the word 'best' in front of a lot of these cookie recipes. And that's because chocolate chip cookies are all THE best. These Chocolate Chip Cookies from Sara's Baking Blog were the closest recipe we received to a straight up, classic chocolate chip cookie - with the addition of a little sprinkle of sea salt on top.
2. Urban Legend Chocolate Chip Cookies
We had never heard the urban chocolate chip cookie legend before reading The Kitchen Fairy's recipe but it gave us a giggle. Her cookies may be called the Urban Legend Chocolate Chip Cookies but she's going to share the recipe for free. Hers include oatmeal and shaved chocolate (as well as chocolate chips!).
3. Honey Chocolate Chip Cookies
If you're looking for alternate sweeteners from refined white sugar then Allergy Girl Eats Honey Chocolate Chip Cookies are a great one to try! They're sweetened with honey and also have some cranberries tossed it (chocolate and dried fruit are a delicious combo!). And as she notes, using really good vanilla extract can make a world of difference in your cookies!
4. Mocha Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate and mint are a great team and Little Sweet Baker went next level with her Mocha Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies. These aren't made with a back of mint chocolate chips - she uses fresh mint and a little coffee for that perfect mint mocha blend in a chewy cookie!
5. Sneaky Hemp Heart Chocolate Chip Cookies
If you want a healthy cookie that's legit tasty and kid approved (as in they don't notice the difference) then these Sneaky Hemp Heart Chocolate Chip Cookies from Sneaky Mommies are the ticket. Not only do they include hemp hearts (omega 3 powerhouses) but they've also got almond milk, whole wheat flour and coconut sugar!
6. Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies (GF, nut free and oil free)
If you're looking for a vegan chocolate chip cookie then This Healthy Kitchen has one you'll want to add to your list. Her Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie is also gluten-free, refined sugar free and nut free! In other words, it's "all people friendly"!
7. Peanut Butter and Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies
Peanut butter and banana are another classic combo and when you add chocolate you're making it a perfect trifecta. Whipped it Up came up with Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies and they're moist and chewy and a true cookie delight.
8. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
Our Peanut Butter Cookie recipe is a classic. It's your basic, quick and easy to make peanut butter cookie - you can whip up a batch in minutes for when you have that cookie craving.
