Name: Nicole Harling
Blog name and URL: Culinary Cool http://culinary-cool.blogspot.ca/
Where were you born? Winnipeg MB
Where are you living now? Regina SK Saskatchewan
Why did you start your blog? I’ve always had a passion for cooking and baking and sharing it with people. Every time I would bake or make something delicious, I would post it on facebook or I would take it to work and friends and co-workers were always asking me for the recipe. Not only that, but I’ve been following food blogs for years and had always thought it would be fun to do. Just over a year ago, I decided to give it a whirl, and haven’t looked back since!
How did you decide on your blog name? One of the blogs I follow has a pretty clever slogan, “Your dose of culinary cool” and the “culinary cool” part has always kind of stuck with me. The months leading up to actually starting the blog, I brainstormed names and I kept coming back to this one. I guess I can thank Madalina at Duhlicious for the help on that one!
What do you blog about? My blog is all about food and recipes that I love. Occasionally I throw in a post about food I’ve eaten on vacation or while out on the town.
What post are you most proud of and why? I am most proud of the most unoriginal and simple recipe on the whole blog; my Aunty Diane’s Date Square. I had been on a mission to document all our family’s traditional recipes when my aunt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I was lucky enough to have this recipe already in writing when she passed away last September. I quickly whipped up a batch of the date square before heading home for the funeral. I quickly (and without much thought) took a few photos minutes before I left the house because I knew I wanted to share the recipe. I edited the photos on the 5 hour drive from Regina to Winnipeg to keep my mind off things. This was the first photo I ever had accepted on Foodgawker and I honestly can’t think of a better recipe to be my first!

Which post do you wish received more love and why? I wish my dry rib poutine received more love. My photography skills are still developing, so the photo was weak, but I promise you, this recipe is the bomb!!

Which post’s success surprised you and why? The recipe that received the most love and was featured on numerous other blogs was my Beer-Cheese Potato Bites. I added some beer and cheese to mashed potatoes and deep fried them. I really didn’t think I was being innovative or unique, but apparently others thought so and that’s alright with me!

What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without? My i-Phone hands down! It’s packed with photos and music and the ability to have internet access anywhere is pretty dandy.
What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without? It might seem cliché, but I could not live without my robin’s egg blue KitchenAid mixer. I love that thing!!
Favourite food, care to share a recipe? I’m a lover of all food, but I really fancy chicken parmesan, butter chicken, cabbage rolls, perogies and my Baba’s Paska.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page? I own my own small business called Brawn & Body Activewear. We carry Canadian made yoga inspired activewear for women but we specialize in MMA clothing and gear. I know a lot about MMA haha! I don’t have any kids, but my husky Zoe is my fur baby. Love her to bits.
What makes your blog unique? The dog hair I sometimes have to Photoshop out of photos…and also, the stray dog hair that sometimes makes its way into my baking. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that?
