FBC Featured Member: My Friend's Bakery

Blog Name: My Friend's Bakery

Where were you born: I was born in the beautiful city of Winnipeg, MB

Where are you living now? My family and I reside in Winnipeg, MB. The heart of the beautiful Canadian prairies.

Why did you start your blog?

In 2012 I was one step away from opening my own bakery and cafe.  I had my business plan completed, my menu was planned, the location was scouted and I was ready to go, and then my mom suddenly passed away and I found myself at a crossroads. After much soul searching, I decided that spending 12 - 14 hours per day in a restaurant was not the way I wanted my children to grow up. So I put the bakery/cafe dream on hold, at least for the time being, and decided to begin blogging as a way to express myself creatively, as well as a way to continue to keep my hands and heart in my bakery and cafe dream, even in a small way.

How did you decide on a blog name?

I do baking for weddings, showers, birthdays and other events for friends and family, and one of my friends, who is a wedding and party planner, would get asked  "Where did you get this great cupcake?" or "Who made all the dainties?", and she would always reply "My friend made it." Thus My Friend's Bakery was born.

What do you blog about?

Anything and everything. I try and write stories about my life that reflect my personality and my true feelings and I try to write recipes that will somehow relate to the story. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and that's OK too.

What post are you most proud of and why?

Pistachio Pudding Cake. It is a story about my Mom and how she has influenced my life. It's not the most popular post on my blog, nor does it receive the most hits, but it is true to my heart

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Pasta With Chicken And Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce. Because it's really, really good!

Which post's success surprised you and why?

Peanut Butter Marshmallow Confetti Squares. I thought that everyone made these, or at least knew someone who did, because they have been around forever. Apparently, I was mistaken

What is the one (non-kitchen) gadget you can't live without?

My camera. I use a Canon DSLR camera for all my pictures and I am very rarely without it.

What is the one kitchen gadget you can't live without?

My Kitchen Aid mixer. I currently have two of them on the counter and and extra one still in the box!  Just in case.

Favorite Food, care to share a recipe?

That's a tough question.  My favorites seem to change with the seasons and holidays, and of course I've never turned down a slice of pizza in my life.  But currently, my favorite is Roasted Beet and Orange Salad with Honey Orange Dressing. I have it 4 or 5 times per week and it's delicious! Sometimes I'll change it up and add strawberries, grapes, or almonds, and sometimes I'll leave the beets raw, but it has become a staple in my weekly menu.

What else should we know about you that may or may not be in your "About Me" page?

I have a sarcastic, sometimes wicked sense of humor. I hate horror movies, I love romance novels, and I am a firm believer in telling it like it is, all the time, no exceptions, even when it isn't asked for.

What makes your blog unique?

I don't just post recipes and food related tidbits. I invite you into my kitchen for a cup of coffee and a chat, and I hope that I make my readers feel like we are friends.

I am a marriage commissioner in Winnipeg so if you’re looking for the best baking for a wedding or shower, My Friend’s Bakery gets an A+ in my books. She has been the supplier of the Christmas Cookies at the Festival of Trees and Lights for the past 3-4 years and those are always a huge hit. Talented and professional and always meets the deadlines. Great service and great food.
