Several years ago, food trend expert Dana McCauley wrote a piece for us wondering if Gochujang was going to be the next Sriracha. She was right! This Korean chili paste has come on like gangbusters in North America of late and it's easy to understand why.
As we explored in this History and Introduction to Gochujang in our One Curious Ingredient series, gochujang is not your ordinary hot sauce. Sure it's spicy. But all hot sauces are spicy!
Gochujang isn't just spicy chili peppers. It's also made with fermented soy beans, salt and sticky, glutinous rice that gives it a spicy, sweet and salty flavour profile. It's also made with a type of pepper that's specific to Korea, all of which combines for a beautiful depth of flavour that can add so much to your cooking!
With its increasing popularity you can now buy gochujang in most grocery stores with an Asian foods section as well as most Asian markets or grocers. And if that fails, try Amazon - they have lots of different varieties to choose from! Here's a few well known ones to try:
Now you've got your container of gochujang, it's time to use it! And we've got over 20 recipes that use gochujang just waiting for you to make them. They're all full of so much flavour with that delicious hint of umami that gochujang brings to dishes! Enjoy!
